Outdoors at Westchester

Recess Equipment and Safety Procedures

It is essential that students have outside time to run around and play.  When weather permits, students have at least 20 minutes of outside time for recess, and periodically they have other opportunities during the school day to enjoy the outdoors.    While recess is an important part of the day for elementary students, ensuring that they understand how to properly use the equipment and implementing measures to keep them safe are critical.   With a focus on safety and supervision during time outdoors, Westchester staff will:

  1. Review equipment safety procedures with students at the beginning of the school year and as often as necessary.
  2. Remind students to stay within the campus boundaries and away from fences.
  3. Continually monitor students on the playground, providing redirection and support, as needed.
  4. Supervise in specified zones to ensure coverage of the entire playground.

Westchester Woods

2nd graders weeding in WE Woods

Our WE Woods provide a unique space and opportunity for student learning.  In the spring and summer of 2025, various staff members, students, and members of the community collaborated on clean-up and restoration projects, and thanks to the generosity of a Westchester family and the commitment of a few Westchester staff members, there is a new Story Walk for all to enjoy.  Each month, there will be a new story displayed in the woods, and all classroom teachers are encouraged to take their students through the Story Walk at least once every month.  Below are some other ways that teachers may utilize the WE Woods with their students.

  • Reading Time Outdoors
  • Sound Hunts
  • Outdoor Class Meetings
  • Wonder Walks
  • Reader's Theater
  • Nature-Inspired Art

Chickens!

chickens at Westchester

Chickens are part of the community at Westchester!  Residing adjacent to the South Playground, our chickens are a favorite for many students, staff, and families.  Caring for our chickens requires the generosity of time from volunteers, who hold the title "Chicken Checkers."  On weekends and days when school is not in sessions, these volunteers visit the coop to replenish the chickens' food and water.  If you are interested in helping with our chickens, please call the school office.  Bonus:  Volunteers may take home any eggs collected during their shift!
