Inclement Weather
Decision Making
The decision to implement the weather emergency schedule is made by the superintendent of schools with the safety of students and staff as top priority. There are many negative implications of closing school — impacts on parents finding childcare or taking time off from work, delays in teacher lesson plans, and the disruption to our student's academic routines and extracurricular activities. No storm system is ever the same, which is why we utilize information from the National Weather Service, reports of local and area road conditions, as well as consider any travel advisories that might be in effect.
Notification
Families will receive a phone call from the District (using our mass notification system), announcing the decision to cancel school. The successful delivery of this phone call is dependent that there is accurate contact information for each student. If you've recently changed cell phone providers or purchased a new phone, this may cause issues with receiving notifications. If this happens, please contact your school directly for assistance.
The notification to cancel or delay school will be posted on the Kirkwood School District website, District Facebook page and tweeted on the District's twitter handle which is @kwoodschools.
You may listen or watch for announcements on radio/TV. Please note that stations report this information at various times and in various formats and that stations may change their participation. School closing is also posted on the websites for many of these stations including: KSDK Channel 5 (NBC), KMOV Channel 4 (CBS), KTVI Channel 2 (Fox) and KPLR Channel 11 (CW).
Individuals who have downloaded the Kirkwood School District app will receive a push notification. You can download this free app in the Apps on Google Play store, or the iTunes App store.
NO ANNOUNCEMENT MEANS SCHOOLS OPERATE ON REGULAR SCHEDULES.

Alternative Methods of Instruction
The first 36 hours of cancelled school (equivalent to about 5 full days) will be traditional snow days, and no school will be in session.
Any additional snow days will be a day for Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI). More about AMI procedures for the Kirkwood School District can be found on our AMI page.
