Clubs and Activities
Chess Club
During Chess Club at Westchester, students have the opportunity to learn, play, and master chess. Open to grades k-5, students participate in Chess Club at their current learning level. Chess Club meets before school, once a week, and there is no cost to participate. Students who want to sharpen their brains while having lots of fun are encouraged to join.
Equations Club
This club is based around a game called Equations: The Game of Creative Mathematics. It was invented by Yale Professor Layman Allen in 1960. During each match of the game, players are challenged to use mathematical knowledge and skills in new and different ways. WE had teams for several years prior to 2020.
Interested students should:
- have immediate recall of math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
- enjoy fast-paced and competitive games
- have a strong interest and ability in math.
Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is an empowerment program focused on helping girls develop their inner strength, build positive friendships, navigate conflict, and work together to impact the community. Trained to lead lessons that combine physical activity with the development of life skills, Westchester staff members and community volunteers inspire students to discover, grow, and refine their self-confidence, while promoting team connection and empathy for others. At the end of the program, participating students complete a 5K together, during which they celebrate their shared accomplishments.
Pokémon Club
This is a club for students to learn the Pokémon TCG, test their skills, and become true Pokemon Masters! Students signing up for the club will be allowed as a first come, first serve basis as we have a limited space and pre-made decks. Students will need to be able to read independently as they are going to be reading attacks on the cards. Students also will need to be able to compute basic subtraction facts in order to calculate lost HP.
Read, Right & Run
The GO! St. Louis Read, Right, & Run Marathon (RRRM) goal is to develop reading-proficient, community-minded, and physically fit children in grades K-8. The program challenges participating students to READ 26 books, RIGHT the community with 26 good deeds, and RUN 26.2 miles over a 26-week period.
Westchester staff members lead the program, and after 26 weeks of hard work, the program culminates with students completing their race day goals, which include finishing either a 1.2 mile or 5K run in Forest Park. RRRM practices begin in January and continue until race week, which typically occurs in April.
Robotics
We are proud of our competitive robotics program at Westchester. Students in 4th and 5th grade have an opportunity to apply for the VEXIQ team. Once chosen, students design, build, code, and drive their team robot in VEXIQ tournaments around St. Louis and the state of Missouri. Since being founded in 2018, Westchester students have been invited to the Missouri State Tournament every year, where their skills in programming and Robot design have been highlighted. Prior to joining the VEXIQ team, students do not need to have robotics skills; however, they must be interested in learning, enjoy being part of team, and like having fun.
Sunrise Singers
Sunrise Singers is a choir open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. The groups focuses on singing, learning choreography and incorporating artistic musical elements into scheduled performances. In the past, Sunrise Singers have performed at Keating Theater at KHS as part of the Fall Choral Concert. Additionally, the 4th and 5th grade members of the Sunrise Singers were chosen to participate in the Kirkwood All-District Festival of Choirs: a day of singing and learning at KHS, culminating in an evening concert at Keating Theater. Sunrise Singers also perform a concert at Westchester to conclude the season.
